New Kind of City More and more people b/g to move to cities Cities were home to the working population l Rich moved from the cities to suburbs l New building regulations required… Running water l Internal drainage system l Ability to bring in clean water and expel sewage l Underground sewage lines carried sewage far from the cities for disposal l Electricity – regular hot baths were available
4 New Classes New Elite class (Upper class) l Super rich – old nobility and new industrialists (factory owners) Upper middle class l Doctors, lawyers, scientists, etc. – good income, but not the super rich Lower middle class (new white-collar workers) l Shopkeepers, office workers, teachers, etc. – made enough, but not a lot of extra money Working class l Factory workers – poor, but living conditions were improving since the 1 st Industrial Revolution
A Change for Women b/g to push for equality b/w the sexes l Mainly as typists, secretaries, salesclerks, etc. Feminism – mvmt for women’s rights l Women b/g to ask for suffrage Suffrage – the right to vote l Susan B. Anthony & Elizabeth Cady Stanton led the way l Many b/l women having this right would corrupt their morals and therefore corrupt the family structure l Women did not gain this right until 1920 in the 19 th Amendment to the Constitution l
Education Late 1800’s govt. b/g to set up state financed schools l Boys and girls 6 -12 were required to attend these primary schools l l Created new job possibilities States b/g to train teachers by setting up teacher-training schools School b/c important because of industrialization and voting l l 2 nd Ind. Rev. needed trained and skilled laborers More people were voting
