The Second Coming of Our Lord Jesus Christ

“The Second Coming of Our Lord Jesus Christ” Matthew 24: 27 -30

23 of the 27 NT Books explicitly refer to the visible, literal, physical, glorious return of Christ to this earth! There are 260 chapters in the NT and over 300 references to the Second Coming of Christ. Jesus referred to his own coming about 20 times and His followers are commanded nearly 50 times to be ready for His coming!

1) The Place of His Second Coming:

A. Zechariah 14: 4 “And in that day His feet will stand on the Mount of Olives, which faces Jerusalem on the east. And the Mount of Olives shall be split in two, from east to west, making a very large valley; half of the mountain shall move toward the north and half of it toward the south. ” B. Matthew 24 -25 – The Olivet Discourse

C. Acts 1: 9 -11 “Now when He had spoken these things, while they watched, He was taken up, and a cloud received Him out of their sight. 10 And while they looked steadfastly toward heaven as He went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel, 11 who also said, ‘Men of Galilee, why do you stand gazing up into heaven? This same Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will so come in like manner as you saw Him go into heaven. ’”

2) The People who will Accompany Christ at the Second Coming: A. Zechariah 14: 5 “Thus the Lord my God will come, and all the saints with You. ” B. Matthew 25: 31 “When the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the holy angels with Him, then He will sit on the throne of His glory. ” C. 1 Thessalonians 3: 13 “…at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ with all His saints. ”

D. 2 Thessalonians 1: 7 “…and to give you who are troubled rest with us when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with His mighty angels…” E. Jude 14 “Behold, the Lord comes with ten thousands of His saints. ” (countless numbers of His saints!)

F. Revelation 19: 11, 14 – “Now I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse. And He who sat on him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He judges and makes war… 14 And the armies in heaven, clothed in fine linen, white and clean, followed Him on white horses. ”

3) The Purposes of the Second Coming: A. Christ is Coming to Fulfill His Promise: Zechariah 14: 4; Matthew 25: 31; Acts 1: 9 -11 B. Christ is Coming to Defeat the Antichrist and His Armies: Revelation 19: 19 -21

C. Christ is Coming to Regather and Restore Faithful Israel: Isaiah 11: 11; 43: 5 -6; Jeremiah 30: 10; 33: 6 -9; Ezekiel 36: 24 -38; 37: 1 -28 1. A Physical Regathering: 2. A Spiritual Regathering:

“Then the sign of the Son of man will appear in heaven, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. 31 And He will send His angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they will gather together His elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other. ” Matthew 24: 30 -31.

Christ is Coming to Bind the Devil: Revelation 20: 1 -3 G. Christ is Coming to Establish Himself as King: Revelation 19: 16; Isaiah 9: 6 -7; Daniel 2: 44; Matthew 19: 28; Luke 1: 32 -33

4) The Pattern of His Coming: A. Personally “This same Jesus who was taken up from you into heaven, will so come in like manner as you saw Him go into heaven. ” Acts 1: 11 B. Literally “This same Jesus who was taken up from you into heaven, will so come in like manner as you saw Him go into heaven. ” Acts 1: 11

C. Visibly “Then if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Christ!’ or ‘There!’ do not believe it. 24 For false christs and false prophets will rise and show great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect. 25 See, I have told you beforehand. 26 “Therefore if they say to you, ‘Look, He is in the desert!’ do not go out; or‘Look, He is in the inner rooms!’ do not believe it. 27 For as the lightning comes from the east and flashes to the west, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be. ” Matthew 24: 23 -27

“Behold, He is coming with clouds and every eye will see Him, even they who pierced Him. And all the tribes of the earth will mourn because of Him. Even so, Amen. ” Revelation 1: 7 D. Suddenly “As lightning comes from the east and flashes to the west, so also will be the coming of the Son of Man be. ” Matthew 24: 27 “I will come upon you as a thief. ” Revelation 3: 3

E. Dramatically “Immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken. ” Matthew 24: 29

“And there will be signs in the sun, in the moon, and in the stars; and on the earth distress of nations, with perplexity, the sea and the waves roaring; 26 men’s hearts failing them from fear and the expectation of those things which are coming on earth, for the powers of the heavens will be shaken. 27 Then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. 28 Now when these things begin to happen, look up and lift up your heads, because your redemption draws near. ” Luke 21: 25 -28

F. Gloriously “…and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. ” Matthew 24: 30 “…when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with His mighty angels…” 2 Thessalonians 1: 7

G. Triumphantly “You shall break them with a rod of iron; you shall dash them to pieces like a potter’s vessel. ” Psalm 2: 9 “…the breath of His mouth. ” 2 Thessalonians 2: 8

“And I saw the beast, the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered together to make war against Him who sat on the horse and against His army. 20 Then the beast was captured, and with him the false prophet who worked signs in his presence, by which he deceived those who received the mark of the beast and those who worshiped his image. These two were cast alive into the lake of fire burning with brimstone. 21 And the rest were killed with the sword which proceeded from the mouth of Him who sat on the horse. And all the birds were filled (gorged themselves) with their flesh. ” Revelation 19: 19 -21

H. CERTAINLY “Heaven and earth may pass away, but My words will by no means pass away. ” Matthew 24: 35

The first time Jesus came, he allowed Himself to be mocked, persecuted abused and finally crucified between two thieves on a Roman cross. God in human flesh humbled Himself so that He could purchase a pardon for our sins and taste death for every person. But when He comes again, the story will be MUCH different. He will come in power and great glory. Every creature will bow before Him and be subject to His authority. Only those who have accepted by faith what He accomplished at His first coming are ready for His second coming!
