The Science of Sustainability Climate Change Learning Outcomes
The Science of Sustainability Climate Change
Learning Outcomes • I can explain how human activity is contributing to climate change • I can communicate my ideas and opinions on climate change
Activity 1 The previous slide contains some images of the impact of climate change in different parts of the world. Thinking about each one, write down your thoughts on the following questions. • What do you see? • What do you think about each image? • Do you have any questions about the images?
What is climate change? • Climate change refers to the average long-term changes over the entire Earth • These include: • Rising sea levels • Shrinking mountain glaciers • Ice melting at a faster rate than usual in Greenland, Antarctica and the Arctic • Changes in flower and plant blooming times • There are lots of factors that contribute to the Earth’s climate. However, scientists agree that the Earth has been getting warmer due to human activities
Why is carbon important? • Carbon is in carbon dioxide, which is a greenhouse gas that works to trap heat close to Earth • It helps Earth hold the energy it receives from the Sun so it doesn’t all escape back into space • If it weren’t for carbon dioxide, Earth’s ocean would be frozen solid
Activity 2 • Watch the video on the greenhouse effect • Write down three things that humans do that add carbon to the atmosphere
How do we know the climate is changing? • We can’t take Earth’s temperature directly, but we do have a lot of information from weather stations, ocean buoys, remote sensing instruments and even satellites in space that let us see the bigger picture
How do we communicate our ideas and share our knowledge about climate change? • There are lots of ways to communicate our ideas on climate change • Here is one of my favourite videos
Activity 3 • Create a stop motion film or cartoon strip about what climate change means to you • Now you have learned about some of the causes of climate change and what it means for the planet, how can you communicate your knowledge and ideas to other people? • You should include things that you feel are important
