The Science Journal Introduction: How to set up a journal for the science classroom

Purpose of the Science Journal • Enables students to be creative, independent thinkers and writers • Useful resource for reference and review

Components of the Science Journal • • Scientific vocabulary Descriptive, complete notes/explanations All steps of labs identified correctly Diagrams, descriptions and illustrations Problem-solving descriptions Project or experiment ideas Answers to questions from the reading

Materials Needed • • • Composition notebook with ruled white paper Highlighters (optional) Pencil, black and/or blue pens Colored pencils Glue Sticks You will have to replenish materials as needed.

How is the Journal Organized? • • A running “Table of Contents” on page 1 Pages will be labeled by coloring the sides. Input from Teacher/Class notes Output and Creative/Student notes

How your journal will be graded • A grade may be taken on individual assignments or on the journal as a whole so far • An IMPORTANT part of the notebook is its “Visual Appearance. ” Keep it titled, dated, ORGANIZED and NEAT • REMEMBER, students are responsible for keeping up with their notebook, it should be kept in the classroom at all times.

Table of Contents Safety Write the word safety on the second line in the table of contents and color the edge of the paper at that line Now, each page in your journal that concerns safety will have the edge marked at that place Table of Contents

Inside Front Cover • Name and schedule • You may decorate the cover of your journal as long as it is neat and school appropriate. • Use a timer and give them about 10 minutes OR assign this as homework to introduce the journal to their parents.
