The rudimentary of chemical reaction Grade 10 to 12 Edited by Mohamed Nasir Supervised by Dr. R. Hartshorne
introduction The focus of this lesson is for the student to understand the basic chemistry functions of writing balanced equations and identifying chemical reactions
Pre-Requisites v Basic Algebra skills v Understanding the concepts including: - coefficients and subscripts - elements of the periodic table - naming compounds - valence electrons and oxidation number of each element.
A traditional lesson v objectives. The student will be able to: - identify reactants, products and symbols in a chemical equation; - apply the law of conservation of mass while writing balanced equations; - identify types of chemical reactions. v Expected Outcomes - students will be able to write balanced equations of different reaction types.
Materials and activities v. Materials - Note presented through power point - lab materials - practice worksheets v Activities - note-taking - lab experiments which demonstrate concepts. - practice worksheets
Example of Notes on Power. Point Reactants 2 Na. CL + H 2 SO 4 Products Na 2 SO 4 + 2 HCL
Evaluation v Student progress is measured through v v worksheets, quizzes, and labs. Problem areas – different pace and learning styles of student. General Issue - amount of repetition practice needed.
Expectations for a Technology enhanced lesson v correlate with today’s students’ active v learning needs. Enhance problem-solving skills among students
Expectations v Encourage more involvement and participation from all types of students. v Increase student responsibility. v Enhance the curriculum.
Materials and Resources v Computers on Wheels (COWs) v internet access v Power. Point notes introducing concepts v. Presentation device (In. Focus or TV adaptor) v Web. Quest assignment
Activities v Internet http: //www. chemtutor. com/react. htm students will explore the basics of chemical reactions. v Web. Quest
Activities (cont. ) v Student should use resources such as : - http: //dbhs. wvusd. k 12. us/ - http: //www. highschoolhub. com - http: //www. bigchalk. com v Presentation will include : -Definition of reactants which will lead to prediction of products based on type of reaction. - Demonstration of balancing the equation.
Assessment v A rubric evaluating accuracy of information presented which include: - correct definition. - correctness of taking reactants and predicting products. - Representation of balanced equation. - student survey of group member particpation during research. - Demonstration by all students of understandiing of concept through example problems from teacher.
Application / Advantages v. Web. Quests can be used for just about any concept taught in any subject area. v By using technology enhanced lessons web-based tools such as quiz box further opportunities of sharing lessons can occur.
Effects on Learning v Makes the students more active in and responsible for their learning: - allow for more self evaluation - allow for more interaction between students - allow for more interaction between teacher and students.
Effect on Learning (cont. ) v Allow students to proceed at their own pace. v Give the students the practice on presenting information.
