RCW 28 A. 410. 043 “School counselors serve a vital role in maximizing student achievement, supporting a safe learning environment, and addressing the needs of all students through prevention and intervention programs that are part of a comprehensive school counseling program. ” 4
School counselors align their work with MTSS through the implementation of a comprehensive school counseling program designed to affect student development in the academic domain (achievement), the career domain (career exploration and development) and the social/emotional domain (behavior). 5
School counselors provide responsive services including internal and external referral procedures, short-term counseling or crisis intervention focused on mental health or situational (e. g. grief, difficult transitions) concerns with the intent of helping the student return to the classroom and removing barriers to learning. 6
Healthy students and safe schools are a top educational priority! School counselors are vital resources in preventing violent incidents, intervening when concerns arise about potential violence and responding when violence occurs. 7
School counselors create classroom lessons and provide individual counseling to help students complete the High School and Beyond Plan requirement. 8
School counselors inspire and encourage Washington middle school students from low-income families to prepare for and pursue postsecondary education through the College Bound Scholarship 9
School counselors collaborate with classroom teachers to provide social emotional learning curriculum to all students through direct instruction, team-teaching or providing lesson plans for learning activities or units in classrooms. 10
