THE ROLE OF STANDARDS IN THE CLASSROOM Jacquelyn Hicks Mr. Shkorupa 04/13/16 EDU 201
WHAT DOES THAT MEAN? Learning standards are concise, written descriptions of what students are expected to know and be able to do at a specific stage of their education. Learning standards describe educational objectives. What students should have learned by the end of a course, grade level, or grade span—but they do not describe any particular teaching practice, curriculum, or assessment method. For example, a first-grade math standard may state that by the end of first grade students are expected to count by 2 s, 5 s and 10 s to 100.
WHY ARE STANDARDS IMPORTANT? Standards are guideposts for schools. Teachers, parents and students use them as a tool to focus on what students are expected to learn. Without standards, districts and schools don’t have goals to shoot for. By matching what is taught in the classroom to the standards in each subject area, students (and their parents and teachers) will know what teachers should be teaching, what students should be learning and what they will be tested on.
ELEMENTARY SCHOOL … It is the first chapter of our children's educations. Where they learn their ABC’s and 123’s. The Skills they will use for their rest of their lives. For example, so by having the role of standards in the classroom regardless in which classroom they are in, or state, every 1 st grader is required to learn the same thing around the world. That keeps everyone on track and no child is left behind.
STARTING OFF THE YEAR … AS THE TEACHER Be prepared, organized Don’t smile too much Set rules Routine Explain and answer questions Setting goals Familiarize yourself with your students
COMMON CORE IS THE NEW BLACK Some of us like it some of us dislike it – What is common core: State Standards Initiative is an educational initiative in the United States that details what K– 12 students should know in English language arts and mathematics at the end of each grade, which were designed to ensure that students graduating from high school are college- or careerready.
