THE ROLE OF SPORT IN NATION BUILDING
What triggers our causes of certain behaviour • Sport is one of the best ways to contribute to nation building. • When you support a sportsperson or national team competing for South Africa, you feel proud of your country. • We know we are one nation no matter how diverse we are. • Our one goal as we stand together is to do our best as a sporting nation.
Participant and spectator behaviour in sport • When participants behave badly they set bad examples as role models. • They frustrate spectators and this could lead to violence. • When spectators behave badly they could harm the sporting event. • There is great responsibility on both participants and spectators to make sure we build our nation through good behaviour at sporting events.
Exposure to positive behaviour programmes • A sports code of conduct • A code for players and spectators aim to: • Get rid of violent and harmful actions at recreational and sport facilities. • Ensure a positive, safe and uplifting environment for spectators and participants. • Develop a culture of safe, fair play and positive sporting for all. • Ban racism from sport.
Positive behaviour programmes • Hoops 4 Hope • Lovelife • Lets’ Play
The impact of behaviour on participants, spectators, teams opposition, community, society and nation • • It can be good and bad. Sporting behaviour leads to good effects. Unsporting behaviour has harmful effects. How you behave has a positive or negative effect on everybody else.
How sport can support nation building • It can build tolerance, understanding and respect. • It has the power to oppose racism, discrimination and human rights abuses. • It helps us to make friends with strangers and build relationships. • Build relationships across cultures, languages, religions, ages, and incomes. • When we host an international sporting event we are one nation, supporting one team.
• Our diverse cultures come together for the love of the sport, the game and our country. • E. g 2010 World Cup soccer. • People say it was the best World Cup ever!
When sport detracts from nation building • This happens when spectators, players, match officials and administrators do not behave in a sporting way. • Therefore, it is important that we all do our best to promote sporting behaviour.
