ECONOMIC IMPORTANCE • National • Employment – career opportunities in agriculture in ones country • Food Security – being self-sufficient in food. Not dependent on imported food. Create job opportunities in agriculture. • Contribution to Gross Nation Profit (GNP) or Gross Domestic Product (GDP) – the total value of goods produced and services provided by a country during one year.
Economic Importance • Regional • Employment - career opportunities in agriculture in other regional/caricom countries such as Jamaica, Guyana etc. • Food Security – exporting produce to other regional/caricom countries. Creating market for produce planted • Trade Liberalisation – is the removal or reduction of restrictions or barriers on the free exchange of goods between nations. These barriers include tarrifs such as duties and surcharges and nontariffs barriers such as licensing rules and quotas. Eradication of these restrictions promote free trade.
Economic Importance • International • Foreign Exchange – when Caribbean agricultural goods and services are sold to other countries, foreign exchange is earned. For example, the export of bananas and coffee earns foreign currency. • Trade Liberalization • ASSIGNMENT Research and briefly describe three (3) functions of the following agriculture organisations: 1.
