The Rock Cycle

Task: Order the statements below Statement Order The deposited rocks build up in layers, called sediments. This process is called sedimentation. 4 Sedimentary rocks are formed from the broken remains of other rocks that become joined together. 1 The weight of the sediments on top squashes the sediments at the bottom. This is called compaction. 5 When the river reaches a lake or the sea, its load of transported rocks settles to the bottom. We say that the rocks are deposited. 3 The water is squeezed out from between the pieces of rock and crystals of different salts form. The crystals stick the pieces of rock together. This process is called cementation. 6 A river carries, or transports, pieces of broken rock as it flows along. 2

The rock cycle:

Weathering: breaking down rocks on the surface of the Earth. There are three types of weathering (biological physical and chemical). Biological Weathering: Animals like rabbits burrow into the Earth and plant roots grow in the cracks and split the rock. Physical weathering: When rocks get hot in the day they expand, at night they cool down and contract. Over time this causes the rocks to crack. If water gets into cracks in rocks and freezes it expands, when it melts the rock can crack. This is called freeze thaw. Chemical weathering: Acid rain reacts with the rocks causes them to break down.

Erosion: Wind and water move the broken rock particles away. • After the floods in February you could see the effects of erosion on the paths and rocks around the rivers in the lake district

Transportation and deposition: Rivers and streams transport rock particles to other places. Rock particles are deposited in lakes and seas. It can also happen with wind , but he particles have to be much smaller • Most of the time transportation happens slowly but sometimes we can have extreme weather causing mudslides. • https: //www. youtube. com/watch? v=791 o 4 LPq. Tasks: Follow the link and have a go at the revision quiz on BBC bite size • https: //www. bbc. co. uk/bitesize/guides/zwd 2 mp 3/test • • Email me your score • Then have a go at filling in the rock types and processes of the rock cycle on the next slide. Processes go on arrows and rock types go in boxes with the word rock in them. There is a word bank to use.
