The Fredonian Rebellion n Haden Edwards had permission to bring 800 families near Nacogodoches

The Fredonian Rebellion n The settlers were MAD and complained to government. n Mexican government agreed with settlers and canceled Edwards’ land grant.

Result n Edwards tried to lead a revolution. n Benjamin Edwards (brother) claimed East Texas as Independent Republic of Fredonia. n 1826 rode into Nacogdoches and adopted the Fredonian Declaration of Independence.

Results n Most Texans (Tejanos and US settlers) opposed the Fredonian Rebellion. n Stephen F. Austin called out militia. n The rebels fled. n Small event but attracted a lot of attention!

Why the name Fredonian? n Fredonia was name used in early America describing America as a place of freedom.

U. S. Interferes n In 1826 President John Quincy Adams offered Mexico $1 million for Texas. n Four years later President Andrew Jackson upped the offer to $5 million. n Such offers angered Mexican officials and only increased their determination to hold onto Texas.
