CONTEXT Ezek 1: 1 -3 In the thirtieth year, in the fourth month, on the fifth day of the month, as I was among the exiles by the Chebar canal, the heavens were opened, and I saw visions of God. On the fifth day of the month (it was the fifth year of the exile of King Jehoiachin), the word of the LORD came to Ezekiel the priest, the son of Buzi, in the land of the Chaldeans by the Chebar canal, and the hand of the LORD was upon him there.

THEME The glory of Yahweh has departed from His land, because He is jealous for His name. But His glory will return, because He is jealous for His name. Ultimately, His glory will be restored to the entire earth in the last days.

THE REVELATION OF YAHWEH’S GLORY Ezek 1: 26 -2: 1 And above the expanse over their heads there was the likeness of a throne, in appearance like sapphire; and seated above the likeness of a throne was a likeness with a human appearance. And upward from what had the appearance of his waist I saw as it were gleaming metal, like the appearance of fire enclosed all around. And downward from what had the appearance of his waist I saw as it were the appearance of fire, and there was brightness around him. Like the appearance of the bow that is in the cloud on the day of rain, so was the appearance of the brightness all around. Such was the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the LORD. And when I saw it, I fell on my face, and I heard the voice of one speaking. And he said to me, "Son of man, stand on your feet, and I will speak with you. "

YAHWEH’S JUDGMENT ON JUDAH Ezek 7: 27 The king mourns, the prince is wrapped in despair, and the hands of the people of the land are paralyzed by terror. According to their way I will do to them, and according to their judgments I will judge them, and they shall know that I am the LORD.

YAHWEH’S ZEAL FOR HIS GLORY Ezek 20: 8 -9 But they rebelled against me and were not willing to listen to me. None of them cast away the detestable things their eyes feasted on, nor did they forsake the idols of Egypt. “Then I said I would pour out my wrath upon them and spend my anger against them in the midst of the land of Egypt. But I acted for the sake of my name, that it should not be profaned in the sight of the nations among whom they lived, in whose sight I made myself known to them in bringing them out of the land of Egypt. ”

YAHWEH’S ZEAL FOR HIS GLORY Rom 3: 25 -27 God put forward [Christ] as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God's righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins. It was to show his righteousness at the present time, so that he might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus. Then what becomes of our boasting? It is excluded. By what kind of law? By a law of works? No, but by the law of faith.

And the cherubim lifted up their wings and mounted up from the earth before my eyes as they went out, with the wheels beside them. And they stood at the entrance of the east gate of the house of the LORD, and the glory of the God of Israel was over them.

IDOLS OF THE HEART • “All speculative theology, which rests on philosophical reasoning rather than biblical revelation, is at fault here…To follow the imagination of one’s heart in the realm of theology is the way to remain ignorant of God, and to become an idol-worshipper. ” • “God the Creator is transcendent, mysterious, and inscrutable, beyond the range of any imagining or philosophical guesswork of which we are capable; and hence [we are summoned] to humble ourselves, to listen and learn of Him, and to let Him teach us what He is like and how we should think of Him. ”

IDOLS OF THE HEART • We are compelled “to take our thoughts of God [from God, ] from His own holy Word, and from no other source whatsoever. ” • “We were made in His image, but we must not think of Him as existing in ours. ”

Then the nations will know that I am the LORD who sanctifies Israel, when my sanctuary is in their midst forevermore.

YAHWEH’S GLORY RETURNS TO THE EARTH Ezek 43: 1 -5 Then he led me to the gate, the gate facing east. And behold, the glory of the God of Israel was coming from the east. And the sound of his coming was like the sound of many waters, and the earth shone with his glory. And the vision I saw was just like the vision that I had seen when he came to destroy the city, and just like the vision that I had seen by the Chebar canal. And I fell on my face. As the glory of the LORD entered the temple by the gate facing east, the Spirit lifted me up and brought me into the inner court; and behold, the glory of the LORD filled the temple.

YAHWEH’S GLORY RETURNS TO THE EARTH • Ezek 43: 7 And he said to me, “Son of man, this is the place of my throne and the place of the soles of my feet, where I will dwell in the midst of the people of Israel forever. And the house of Israel shall no more defile my holy name, neither they, nor their kings, by their whoring and by the dead bodies of their kings at their high places. ” • v. 9 Now let them put away their whoring and the dead bodies of their kings far from me, and I will dwell in their midst forever.

YAHWEH’S GLORY RETURNS TO THE EARTH • Ezek 48: 35 The circumference of the city shall be 18, 000 cubits. And the name of the city from that time on shall be, The LORD Is There. • Rev 21: 2 -3 And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God. ”

YAHWEH’S GLORY RETURNS TO THE EARTH Rev 21: 22 -24 And I saw no temple in the city, for its temple is the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb. And the city has no need of sun or moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and its lamp is the Lamb. By its light will the nations walk, and the kings of the earth will bring their glory into it.
