About the Author • • • Cormac Mc. Carthy (1933 - present). Raised a Roman Catholic. Spent most of his childhood in Tennessee. Studied at University of Tennessee (never graduated). Spent four years in the U. S. Air Force in the 1950 s. Travelled around Europe, lived in Ibiza for a while. Published several novels. Only got recognised later in life. Won the Pullitzer Prize for Literature in 2007 for "The Road". (Priola)
The novel Based on what you’ve read so far, discuss the following topics: • Post-apocalyptic novel => What do you think happened to the world? Why do you think that? • Themes => What do you think the most important themes of the novel are? Give examples from the novel where this theme/these themes are explored. • Setting, tone and mood=> What are the setting, tone and mood of the first pages? Give examples from the novel to illustrate your answers.
Context • How is The Road similar to 1984? How is it different? • What can you say about the context of the novel? • Do you think the novel has any kind of message? If so, what do you think it is? Why do you think so?
Textual analysis (1) In pairs, pick one extract anywhere from page 1 -35 which you can use for textual analysis. Provide reasons for picking this extract. Possible reasons: good illustration of tone/mood, thematic importance, illustrative of the novel’s message. How long: 15 minutes Why: IB oral When done: think about how to analyse the extract
Textual analysis (2) Read out your extract to the class, and explain why you picked this extract. We’ll discuss in class how relevant the extracts are, and how effective they are for textual analysis. Why: IB oral
Textual analysis (3) In your pair, analyse the extract you’ve chosen. Focus on: - tone / mood (EFFECT ON AUDIENCE) - themes Take notes of your observations. Keep these notes for future reference. How long: 15 minutes Why: IB oral When done: read the novel
