General Francisco Franco (Spain) Spain went into a civil war and General Franco led the rebels against the government. Hitler and the Germans sided with Franco and helped him bomb cities and target civilians.

Adolf Hitler (Germany) WWI veteran, Hitler resented the Treaty of Versailles. Hitler started his own party known as the National Socialist Germany Workers party also known as the Nazi Party. He created Nazism that promoted nationalism and racial superiority.

Adolf Hitler (Germany) Hitler was an outstanding public speaker and gained support. In 1923 he tried to overthrow the government but failed and was imprisoned. In prison Hitler wrote the book Mein Kampf “My struggle”. In the book he wrote about the problems of Germany and what was the blame.

Mein Kampf Outlined the Nazi party ideas Glorified the Aryan race as the best race. (Blond blue eyed German) Criticized the Jewish population. Criticized the Versailles Treaty.

Adolf Hitler (Germany) During the Depression Hitler gets out of jail and like FDR is a young Politian who promotes hope. In 1932 Nazi party become a majority and Hitler is made chancellor but not president. Hitler quickly moved to suspend free speech and press. He had Nazi thugs called Storm troopers silence those that opposed him.

Adolf Hitler (Germany) In the next election the Nazi’s won again and dominated German government. Wanting to put people to work he created jobs building up an unstoppable military. He came up with the idea for a cross country highway he called the autobahn.

Hitler and Mussolini become BFF Hitler breaks the Versailles treaty and Brittan and France do nothing. 1936: Hitler and Mussolini sign a alliance and call themselves the Axis or Axis Powers.

Hitler to the world “Try and Stop Me” Hitler takes over Austria Hitler demanded Czechoslovakia surrender and British prime minster Chamberlain stepped in. Chamberlain agreed to appeasement where you give into demands to keep peace.

The Empire of Japan Emperor Hirohito- Japanese emperor from 1926 -1989. Hideki Tojo- supporter of the Axis Powers and top military leader.

The Empire of Japan grew in strength and soon began to expand their empire. They had wars against China and Russia and had taken over Korea before WW 1. They did well in WW 1 and their economy grew as did their military. Japan was hit hard by the depression and high American tariffs.

Military Takeover? During the depression people blamed the government. The military wanted more power over things. In 1931 against the governments will the Japanese army attacked Manchuria in the Manchuria Incident. Japan withdrew from the League of Nations and went to war with China. In the “Rape of Nanjing” the Japanese killed at least 100, 000 civilians. Most women and children.

China devestated The Japanese invasion halted a Chinese civil war between: Mao Zedong and the communist Vs. Chaing Kai-shek and the Nationalists The two would ally to try and stop the Japanese but could not.
