Purges • Rid the country of all of his political enemies. • 600, 000 “political enemies”

Stalin • Inefficient economy creates food shortages

20 million deaths are attributed to Stalin during his rule of the Soviet Union!

Italy Mussolini (Il Duce) • 1922 • Mussolini is named prime minister and later seizes control of the government

• Used his “black shirts” to eliminate his political enemies

Mussolini • Promised to end Italy’s economic problems • Promises to re-establish the Roman Empire

Mussolini • Italian economy improves • Italy invades and conquers North Africa

Germany Adolf Hitler (Der Furher) • Nazi Party rises to power through intimidation and mass rallies. • Hitler named the Chancellor of Germany in 1933

Hitler Promises • Restore German pride and power • Expand Germany’s border to include all Germanic people • Stabilize the German economy • Purify the German race

Hitler • Eliminates opposition using “brown shirts” • Germany rearms and expands • Germany pride and economy is restored • “Non-Desirables” are eliminated from the political process
