There are many landlocked countries in Europe. http: //d-maps. com/m/europemin 09. gif

Landlocked countries depend on rivers – and cooperation from other countries – to do most of their exporting.

The Rhine and the Danube are. . major rivers and close together in central Europe. http: //deltas. usgs. gov/rivers. aspx? river=danube

Here’s an idea: Since they come so close to each other, let’s connect them to make a waterway all the way across Europe!!! http: //www. eccap. com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/Idea. gif

Connecting the rivers where they were closest did not make sense. It was uphill and the rivers were narrow there. ine Rh Dan ube https: //upload. wikimedia. org/wikipedia/commons/b/b 3/Europa_Ludwigskanal_Rhein_Main_Donau. png

HOWEVER, there was a large tributary of the Rhine River that came close to the Danube on flatter land. ine Rh Dan ube

€ 2. 3 billion euros and 32 years later, Europe had a waterway across the continent.

The canal is 106 miles long and was built to look as natural as possible. http: //www. dw. com/image/0, , 1227269_4, 00. jpg https: //upload. wikimedia. org/wikipedia/commons/9/91/Panorama_altmuehltal 6. jpg

The Danube River drainage basin has been hit especially hard with industrial pollution over the years. http: //vignette 1. wikia. nocookie. net/genealogy/images/f/fa/Danubemap. jpg/revision/latest? cb=20111221035647

Many of the Danube River drainage basin countries were controlled by the Soviet Union until 1993. http: //vignette 1. wikia. nocookie. net/genealogy/images/f/fa/Danubemap. jpg/revision/latest? cb=20111221035647

The Soviet Union was very interested in building their empire through industry. They were not, however, particularly concerned about the environment. http: //vignette 1. wikia. nocookie. net/genealogy/images/f/fa/Danubemap. jpg/revision/latest? cb=20111221035647

The European Union is working to help countries on the Rhine-Danube industrial corridor fix pollution problems. http: //www. vikingrivercruises. com/images/CRUISE_Rhine. Getaway_OVR_Rhine. Katiz.
