• In the summer of 1794, Robespierre’s government fell. • The Terror was over • Moderates – 5 man Directory • Austria, Spain, Prussia, Great Britain wanted to destroy the new French Republic
• Monarchs across Europe are fearful of revolutions spreading • Napoleon Bonaparte fighting for France…
• Napoleon defeated the Austrians, gaining much land for France • Napoleon’s victory made him the hero of France • Napoleon then fought the British in Egypt
• After a series of victories, the people of Paris welcomed their returning hero • They looked to Napoleon to end the political chaos
• Napoleon needed a rich wife to achieve his goals • In 1796, Napoleon married Josephine, a member of the nobility whose husband had been executed by Robespierre • Josephine only escaped death because Robespierre’s Reign of Terror ended
• By November 1799, Napoleon established a new government, • rewrote the Constitution, • made himself head of state under the title “First Consul”
In 1804 Napoleon crowned himself Emperor
Napoleon Becomes Dictator • He brought peace & order back to France by • 1) establishing public schools • 2) a national bank of France • 3) taxes to every citizen
THE NAPOLEONIC CODE OF LAW • abolished feudal privileges • established the equality of every man before the law
• After restoring order in France, Napoleon then turned his attention to building an Empire • BY 1812, Napoleon controlled most of Europe
• Napoleon invaded Russia • harsh winter conditions and the determination of the Russian people, Napoleon was defeated • Of 600, 000 soldiers who entered Russia, 400, 000 died of wounds, starvation or exposure to winter conditions
After Napoleons Defeat in Russia: European Armies attacked French forces. Napoleon was defeated at Leipzig in 1813.
On April 12, 1814, Napoleon was forced to abdicate his throne and was exiled to Elba. King Louis XVIII (brother of Louis XVI) was restored to the French throne
• Napoleon returned less than a year after his exile in 1815, • known as “ 100 Days” - European armies again attacked and defeated Napoleon at Waterloo in 1815
• after his defeat at Waterloo, he abdicated again and was sent into exile… again • Napoleon died in 1821 • Did Napoleon defend or betray the best principles of the French Revolution?
