The First Church – Ephesus “Yet I hold this against you: You have forsaken your first love. Remember the height from which you have fallen! Repent and do the things you did at first. If you do not repent, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place. But you have this in your favor: You hate the practices of the Nicolaitans, which I also hate. ” -- Revelation 2: 2 -6

Nicolaitans = a Form of Gnosticism • Gnostics taught that they had been given by God a “secret knowledge” (gnosis). • They believed in divine “duelism” (two equal gods – one good, and one evil). • They believed that a person consisted of a divine spirit in an evil body. Thus, Jesus – being perfect – could not have been a human. • They believed that their gnosis led to ultimate and perfect knowledge and wisdom (logos).
