Ex: laws & treaties can be ratified. ► Capitol- A building in which government officials meet. Ex: Washington-on the Brazos, Columbia, Houston, were at one time sites of the Capitol. David G. Burnet • Served as the ad interim (temporary) president during the Texas Revolution in 1836.
Sam Houston • 1836 -1838 • 1 st popularly elected president of TX. • Chose Houston for the Republic’s capitol. • Couldn’t run for reelection. • TX Constitution= NO consecutive terms.
Mirabeau B. Lamar • 1838 -1841 (2 nd elected President) • Didn’t want TX to be annexed. • Increased TX debt from $3. 3 million to $8 million. • Involved in establishing education system. “Father of Education in Texas. ” • Chose Austin as the site of the capitol.

Mier Expedition Ø Mexicans attack San Antonio Sept. 1842. Ø Texans attack Mexicans at Salado Creek. Mexicans retreat & take Texan prisoners Ø President Houston orders General Somervell & army of 750 men to Rio Grande to recapture the prisoners. = Not enough troops to defeat the Mexicans. Ø 300 men disobey & invade Mexico at the small town of Mier = need supplies. 900 Mexican soldiers are there waiting. Ø A short battle occurs ending in Texan surrender. March Texans back to Mexico City. 176 make it. Santa Anna orders every 10 th prisoner shot.
