THE REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM
Male Reproductive System n To produce sperm, semen & testosterone n Aids in reproduction & excretes wastes n Allows for Erection & Ejaculation
SPERM n Male reproductive cell responsible for fertilization. Contains half of the DNA needed for the development of a human being.
Urinary Bladder n. Stores Urine
Prostate Gland Responsible for making 35% of the semen
Pubic Bone-protection
Cowper’s Gland or Bulbourethral Gland Responsible for producing 5% of Semen
Testes or Testicle n Two egg-shaped structures responsible for making sperm and producing the male hormone testosterone.
Seminiferous Tubules 750 feet coiled n Sperm develops and grows n
Anus-excretes feces Rectum-stores and excretes feces
VAS DEFERENS n. Tube which sperm and/or semen are transported through.
FORESKIN n. Layer of skin located around penis. n. Main function is protection of penis.
EPIDIDYMIS n. Located above testes and is responsible for maturation of sperm.
PENIS n. Main external organ of the male reproductive system.
SCROTUM n. Houses and protects testes. n It is responsible for regulating temperature of the testes.
Testosterone Male Hormone n Increases metabolism n Deepens voice n Increase muscles n
URETHRA n Transports and excretes semen or urine out of the penis. Semen = sperm + fluids.
Seminal Vesicle Responsible for making 60% of the Semen
FEMALE REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM
FUNCTIONS n Release mature eggs n Produces estrogen and progesterone n Aids in reproduction n Excretes urine n Aids in menstruation
CERVIX n Produces cervical mucus, expands to deliver baby & contracts during menstruation if necessary. n At base of uterus.
Estrogen n. Female hormone responsible for secondary sex characteristics.
FALLOPIAN TUBES n Carries mature egg(s) to uterus. n Fertilization usually occurs here.
VAGINAL CANAL n Allows for excretion of endometrium/egg (unfertilized) or baby (fertilized) n Aids in reproduction n Provides lubrication
Vaginal opening n. Opening for reproduction n. Excretes lining and lubrication
Mons Pubis n. Extra fat that forms padding on the front pelvic bone n. Function-cushion for pain-free reproduction
UTERUS n. Pear-shaped muscular organ that provides a place for fertilized egg to grow. Houses endometrium if unfertilized. n. Contracts
VULVA: Three Components n Clitoris: Aids in lubrication & stimulation. n Labia Majora: protection n Labia Minora: protection
OVARIES n Release mature egg(s) and produces female sex hormones; estrogen and progesterone. n Size of Almond
URETHRA n. Excretes Urine
