The Renaissance- “Rebirth” � Interest began in education, art and science around 1350 in Europe. Previously, the “Dark Ages” were time of little learning. � Began in northern Italy and spread throughout Europe
Renaissance Artists � Artists, scientists and philosophers took pride in the ability to think and appreciate the beauty in human beings and nature � Two famous Italian artists were – Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo Buonarotti.
Leonardo da Vinci � What are two of Leonardo’s bestknown works? Mona Lisa and The Last Supper � Leonardo wrote his notebooks in mirror writing? Why? � He invented hundreds of things. Most never made.
Michelangelo Buonarotti � Painter and Sculptor � Expressed human emotions in his work such as anger, sorrow and strength � Most famous work the mural on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican Palace in Rome
The Printing Press � Books had been rare, and usually Latin Bibles or law books. Few were allowed to read. � Johannes Gutenberg of Germany invented the printing press with movable type. Literature and the Printing Press � Authors were inspired by both the Renaissance and the printing press to write books in English and Spanish -everyday spoken languages. Before books were written in French and Latin – only educated people could read them
Nationhood � Western rulers became more powerful. � Countries use their power to unite their countries that had a common language and culture - usually by marriage Elizabeth I of England married Prince Phillip II of Spain

Martin Luther � German monk and scholar � Nailed 95 complaints against Catholic church on the door of the church in Wittenberg, Germany on 10/31/1517. � 1520 banished (excommunicated) from the Catholic church for criticism � Organized his own Christian church – taught in German (not Latin) – Lutheran Church
John Calvin � Protestant leader � French followers called Huguenots � England followers called Puritans � Followers sought greater religious, political and economic freedom
