PURPOSE ✦ Provide background information on the Islamic religion to allow nurses to be able to connect on more personal level with patients of this particular religion

OBJECTIVES ✦ Identify the Islamic God as Allah ✦ Describe the six primary beliefs of the Islamic religion ✦ Describe the five pillars of Islam ✦ Identify the form of worship for the Islamic religion ✦ Identify the philosophical side of the Islamic religion ✦ Correlate the Islamic religion to nursing practices

BELIEF IN GOD ✦ Monotheistic, Abrahamic religion ✦ Believe in Allah or “The One” ✦Referred to as “the Almighty, the Creator, the Sovereign, and the Sustainer of everything in the whole Universe” ✦ Muslims, the people of Islam, follow the rules set forth in the Holy Quran, which is their holy book ✦ (ISLAM-GUIDE. THE MORAL CONCEPTION ✦ Five pillars of Islam are the five key beliefs that shape the lives of Muslims ✦ Acting on these daily shows the devotion of Muslims putting their faith first and foremost ✦ The Five Pillars of Islam consist of ✦ Testimony of Faith ✦ Prayer ✦ Giving “Zakat” (giving to the needy) ✦ Fasting for Ramadan ✦ Pilgrimage ✦ to Mecca (ISLAM-GUIDE. PHILOSOPHICAL SIDE OF ISLAM ✦ Early conquests brought Muslims into close contact with civilization ✦ Here they were influenced by Christianity, Judaism, and Greek culture ✦ Neoplatonism ✦ Became ✦ Greek ✦ Soon ✦ One philosophy curriculum was closely followed transmitted to the Islamic world ✦ Al-Kindi ✦ First the prevalent school of thought followed a broadly Neoplatonic approach philosopher of the Muslims of the earliest of the philosophers in Baghdad was a Christian ✦ Yahya Ibn ‘Adi, and his child, al-Farabi created much of the agenda for the next four centuries of work in the Islamic faith. ✦ (Islamic Philosophy)
