WHAT IS READING? • Reading is a fundamental function • Reading is a vital skill in finding a job • According to Janette M. Hughes, Reading is a complex interaction between the text, the reader and the purposes for reading, which are shaped by the reader’s prior knowledge and experiences, the reader’s knowledge about reading and writing language and the reader’s language community which is culturally and socially situated.
IMPORTANCE OF READING • It develops the mind. • Discover new things. • Develops the imagination. • Develop a good self image. • Improves spelling.
THE READING PROCESS • There are Five stages in the reading process: Prereading, Responding, Exploring, and Applying. 1. Firstly Pre-reading basically mean relating to the period before reading a text. It introduces key vocabulary words. Build background knowledge and related vocabulary. And it tends students or readers make predictions.
2. Second is Reading, you read with a purpose and at the same time connect with it. This is where you apply reading strategies and skills. 3. Responding, in this stage readers interpret reading and expand their ideas. 4. Exploring, other term is Rereading, in this stage readers learn new vocabulary words. Readers clarify misunderstanding and explore structural elements.
5. Applying the final stage in the reading process. Readers pause and reflect on the reading, Remember and make connections to life and literature.
WHAT IS WRITING? • Writing is a complex combination of skills which is best taught by breaking down the process. • According to Gardner and Johnson (1997), Writing is a fluid process created by writers as they work. Accomplished writers move back and forth between the stages of the process, both consciously and unconsciously. Young writers, however, benefit from the structure and security of following the writing process in their writing.
THE WRITING PROCESS • The writing process involves a series of steps to follow in producing a finished piece of writing. The steps are Pre-writing, Drafting, Revising, Editing, and Publishing. 1. Pre-writing is the planning phase of the writing process. And it must consist a Topic, Audience, and Content.
2. Drafting is the initial composition by writing all the ideas gathered in an organized manner. The Topic, Audience, and Content must be finalized. 3. Revising focus on the content by reorganizing, rearranging, adding or deleting content the work. The goal of this phase of the writing process is to improve the draft.
4. Editing in this phase the writer proofread and correct errors in grammar and mechanics. Basically, it focuses on the structure. 5. Publishing in this phase writers share their writing with an audience and reflect on the writing process.
