RAT PACK TIMBRES Voice Types Frank Sinatra has a baritone voice, like many other vocalists in this time period. Dean Martin sings more of a bass-baritone rather than a strict baritone. Sammy Davis Jr. on the other hand sings on the tenor side of baritone, with a very nice upper register. Band Types Frank Sinatra often sang with Count Basie’s band, especially in most of his midolder recordings. Most were what I would call extended Big Bands which would consist of the usual Saxes, Bones, Trumpets, and Rhythm section, but would add other families, such as double reeds, and other low and high brass. Dean Martin would sing with anything from the Big Dance bands, to a European group that would include acoustic guitar, violin, horns and an accordion. Sammy Davis Jr. sang with primarily big band, and would often do a tune with his drummer. Styles Frank Sinatra liked to sing in a medium swing. He also enjoyed ballads. He liked his tempos cool. Very Nat King Colesque. Dean Martin was similar to Sinatra in that he liked to sing a medium swing. Sammy Davis Jr. was a high energy person and liked to keep his songs that way. Even with his ballads, he kept a high energy.
