The purpose and resources required for analysing different levels of performance
Objectives P 5 – Analyse two different levels of sports performance. Explain the purpose of, & the resources required for their analysis. 1. Identify 4 different levels of sports performance and understand what is meant by levels of performance. 2. Explain how the purpose for analysis can be different for different levels of performance. 3. Describe the different resources that are available between the different levels of performance.
Task What are the different levels of performance within sport? How many can you name? Give examples of each level
Levels of performance Olympic/world class athlete, professional. – Aim to reach the very peak of excellence County or national standard – Aim to improve standard through coaching, competition and training. Saturday league, out of school club – Health, fitness or social purposes. Did you get these? Performance assessment Monitoring current fitness levels Recovery after injury Goal setting Assessment of health & fitness status Talent ID Identifications of strengths and areas for improvement Squad selection
How does the importance of analysis change as you move through the levels?
Foundation level Emphasis on fun and enjoyment Identifying strengths and weaknesses and providing feedback. Resources required - the support of family and teachers. Participation level Emphasis on developing techniques, Talent may be assessed for further coaching. Analysis is still informal through recommendations and talent scouting. • Little financial resources • Volunteers reluctant to give up more time
Performance level – Analysis becomes very important. Identify talent Squad selection, county and national level Assess current level of performance Identify strengths and weaknesses Assess fitness level and health status Inform the process of goal setting Resources required – Fitness testing/Sport science facilities, expertise of sports scientist and time dedication
Elite level – Every aspect of performance is analysed to the smallest degree. Aspects of health, fitness and performance are analysed on a daily basis. Assess current health and fitness status Identify strengths and weaknesses Assess current level of performance Inform the process of goal setting Identify any future issues or problems Very dependant on resources – Sports scientists with a range of expertise and physical equipment for testing fitness and performance.
Resources What type of resources do we need in order to analyse performance? Equipment Money (Fiscal) Human Time Facilities Scientific support Describe/explain each resource
Equipment – This could be second hand, as old as when the club was set up or brand new designed with the latest technology. Fiscal – How do they fund their sport? Equipment? Time – Analysis can be time consuming. From being analysed as a group to individual in depth analysis. Facilities – From pen to paper out on the field to a sports performance lab. Human – From parents and teacher/coach support to coaching staff, sports scientists, strength and conditioning, physios and doctors. Feedback is essential.
