Director – James De. Monaco • James De. Monaco is a well known film director, most notably known for The Purge Trilogy. He was born in 1969 in Brooklyn, New York. • De. Monaco has written, and directed several films which are listed to the right. • Many people criticize The Purge trilogy for not being realistic and also for the acting. However despite these reviews, the films always make profit because it’s quite an easy film to watch and doesn’t require too much thinking. Director – James De. Monaco (Pt 2) • James De. Monaco’s film style is often seen as gritty and also quite dark, as most of the films he’s written or directed are often set at night, and a lot of the scenes are quite dark to create tension and to keep viewers on the edge of their seats. • De. Monaco’s lowest rated film is Skinwalkers, which only scored 2/10, however his highest rated is The Negotiator which scored 7. 5/10. Also all three Purge films are rated between 5 -5. 5/10.

When we were placed into our groups, we all told each other the scene’s that we had chosen to analyze for our blogs, so we could then try and work out which scene we would actually try to recreate. Herbie chose the record shop scene from ‘Human Traffic’, the reason we didn’t choose this was because we wouldn’t be able to get as many actors that are in the original scene, and also the outfits would have been quite difficult to get a hold of. Henry chose the first pub scene from ‘The Worlds End’, we didn’t choose this because it would be too difficult to recreate the set as we would probably need to film in a real pub which would have probably been too challenging. James chose the scene in ‘Back to the Future’ in which George punches Biff, this would have been too difficult to recreate with the setting and the outfits. Jamie chose the “Please just let us Purge” scene from the original ‘Purge’, this is what we ended up going with as it wasn’t that difficult to recreate as we had the outfits we needed and also there were several locations we could film at around Exeter if needed. I (Jac) chose the interrogation scene from ‘The Dark Knight’ however the reason we didn’t go with this was because we felt that we could recreate the atmosphere and the tenseness better if we went with ‘The Purge’ which is why in the end we decided to go with that. Improvements • The main thing that we wished we improved upon now looking back is the location scouting, as we hadn’t really thought of a secondary location in case our first one had any problems. Which we did, as Lee said, something will always go wrong and we ended up getting kicked out of the cathedral grounds and had to film our scene round the corner which didn’t look as good compared to the original area. We also didn’t spend a lot of time finding a room for the inside scene as we spent a little too much time planning the actual film and trying to figure out actors and outfits. • We should have also started filming a few days earlier to give ourselves more time with editing as even though we got the editing done and finished, we still did it quite quickly and rushed it.

Things we learnt • We learnt more about editing, such as certain cuts and also how to implement music to make the scene tenser and have a more dramatic effect on the audience. • We also learnt more about how audio is important in scenes as we ran into a few problems with the wind whilst filming
