Brainstorm What do you already know about the Catholic church in the medieval ages/Renaissance? Talk to your table and elect one person to write one thing on the whiteboard.

Events leading to the Protestant Reformation ● Abuses of the Church ○ Indulgences: People had to pay the church for their sins to be forgiven ○ They executed people who tried to translate the Bible into the vernacular ○ (Vernacular – common language of the people)

Martin Luther ● German Monk • Risked his life and claimed the church was wrong. He Refused give up his views https: //www. youtube. com/wa tch? v=r 5 P 7 Qk. HCfa. I • In 1517, he Nailed “ 95 Theses (arguments)" on the door of the church

Protestant Revolution? • Luther taught the people that they were saved by faith not indulgences • Luther’s many followers were named protestants (protesters) • Peasant revolts sprang up throughout Europe. • Martin Luther rebuked these peasants. He wanted a peaceful revolution.

Excommunication ● Pope Leo X demanded that Luther recant 41 of his Ninety-Five Theses. ● Luther was brought before the Diet of Worms to debate and prove his point. ● In January 151, Luther was excommunicated from the Church.

A New Church ● Luther’s ideas spread quickly with the help of the printing press. ● Supporters began to organize a new Christian denomination. ● Lutherans and Catholics fought each other. o Fighting in Europe over religion continued to the mid-seventeenth century.

John Calvin • John Calvin, a French reformer, disliked the Catholic Church but disagreed with Luther • didn’t get to heaven through indulgences or faith, but through Predestination (God chooses before you are born whether not you go to heaven). Calvinism founded in Geneva, France 1536

• Henry VIII was a very hard man to get along with. • He wanted a son really bad. • His first marriage for 18 to Catherine of Aragon – Did not bare a son – He asked pope if he could divorce her – Pope said no! – Henry became very mad.

Henry VIII cont. ● Henry was furious that he cited “Spiritual” reasons and he split from the Catholic Church and divorced Catherine of Aragon anyways. ● Henry VIII would have 7 more wives. o His six wife gave him a son named Edward who died in his teens.

Henry was a vicious man and had two of his wives beheaded

More Drama ● Henry's daughter Mary became Queen and she killed thousands of people who were Protestant. o Burned them at the stake o Mary's nickname was Bloody Mary. ● After Mary’s death her half sister Elizabeth would become Queen.

Catholic Reformation ● Catholic's realized that they must change their ways in order to survive. ● Pope Paul III (1530 -1540) set out to revive the Catholic Church authority.

Methods of the Catholic Reformation ● Council of Trent (1545 CE) o A meeting where the Pope and other Catholic officials reorganized themselves. ● The Inquisition o Used force, torture, and execution to get rid of the Protestants. o Ignatius of Loyola started an organization to combat Protestant teachings and spread the Catholic faith (Called Jesuits) o Teresa of Avila was a nun who was chosen by the Catholic Church to reform the convents (where nuns learn the Catholic faith) ● ALL of these reforms helped to “save” the Catholic Church.
