According to the Ohio Department of Education … Topic: Industrialization and Progressivism (1877 -1920) n n Ignited by post-Civil War demand fueled by technological advancements, large-scale industrialization began in the United States during the late 1800 s. Growing industries enticed foreign immigration, fostered urbanization, gave rise to the American labor movement and developed the infrastructure that facilitated the settling of the West. A period of progressive reform emerged in response to political corruption and practices of big business. The Progressive era was an effort to address the ills of American society stemming from industrial capitalism, urbanization and political corruption.

People who … n n n saw the ills of industrialization & urbanization. felt that the gov’t had to step in, correct problems, & reform corruption/spoils system. doubted that free market (laissez-faire) capitalism could improve society & cure social problems. believed in progress, technology, & scientific remedies for social problems. generally liberals who wanted to ease the burden of the “squids” of the world. may or may not be member of Progressive Party (there was no single, unified movement).
