In the Department of Criminalistics the following expertises are carried out: • Identification of: - fingerprints; - voice; - tool marks, footwear and tyre impressions; - bits of paint, glass, plastics, fibres, metals, tapes, oily stains (lubricants, oils) which made traces both on a scene of crime and on clothes of persons involved in it; - fire debris. • Analysis of gunshot damages ( also GSR); • Document and handwriting examination; • Reconstruction of the event and the estimation of the kind and the possibility of the occurrence of the traces on the basis of the analysis of case files and material of evidence. 8

The Institute of Forensic Research in Kraków: has international contacts and co-operation with other forensic institutes in Europe; has participated in several European grants programs (TEMPUS, Leonardo da Vinci); is well equipped; employs specialists who represent a variety of disciplines, i. e. chemistry, biology, toxicology, commodities science, mechanical engineering, psychology and philology ; is the only academic and research centre of its kind under the auspices of the Ministry of Justice in Poland. 18
