The Definition of Critique… • A critical review or commentary, especially one dealing with works of art or literature. • A critical discussion of a specified topic. • The act of criticizing, especially adversely. • A critical comment or judgment. • The practice of analyzing, classifying, interpreting, or evaluating literary or other artistic works. • A critical article or essay; a critique. • The investigation of the origin and history of literary documents; textual criticism.

Develop a Rubric • Make a chart with a number of different categories: – Rhythm – Melody – Instrumentation, etc. • Create an area to include information that might not be covered by the rubric.

The Process of Critique • Listen to the entire musical example once through without writing anything. Get the overall feel to the piece. • Listen again focusing on a specific element of the critiquing rubric. • Listen a third time focusing on as many elements of the rubric as you can. • Formulate your answers to create a coherent assessment of the work.
