Round Table Discussion - Spring 2017 We met with local judges, the SC Bar, Access to Justice, Legal Aid, SCVAN, and lawyers Received input on the need in the Upstate As well as what our program might look like Following this, we pulled together a committee to look at the long term goals for providing pro bono services

Committee Recommendations to Gbar • Form a Foundation to receive benefits of 501(c)(3) status • Funds necessary for admin expenses, reimbursement of litigation expenses, CLE/training, events, etc. • Partner with SC Bar and other organizations where possible • SC Bar – malpractice insurance and marketing • Badges • Studied dozens of local organizations • Committee drafted Mission Statement and selected name
Fall 2017 The recommendations of the long term committee were approved Bill Wilson, Jennifer Howe, Powers Prices, Kirby Mitchell and Matthew Couvillion worked on by-laws and paperwork We partnered with Justice Few and Access to Justice (in addition to the SC Bar) We worked around the clock with Justice Few to develop the software that I hope each of you will use today! And, we organized the DREAM TEAM. .

The Unmet Legal Need: How You Can Help South Carolina Total Population - 4, 750, 144 Percentage of SC Population Below 125% of Federal Poverty Level - 21. 7% SCLS answers, on the average, 23, 700 calls each year requesting legal services There is a significant need for additional attorneys to handle cases for SC’s poverty population. While there are fledgling start-ups providing sliding scale fees, the bulk of the services can only be provided by pro bono attorneys.
