The 5 Principles of Design Proportion Scale Balance Emphasis Rhythm
Proportion and Scale Proportion- is the relationship of the parts of the same object, or the relationship between different objects. Scale- refers to the size of a object in relation to another object

The Greeks and Proportion The Greeks were masters of the use of proportion. They developed the guidelines that have been used for centuries. There are 3 guidelines • Golden Rectangle • Golden Mean • Golden Section
The Golden Rectangle Has sides in a ratio of 2: 3 The short side is 2/3 the length of the long side Ex. Parthenon in Athens, Greece
The Golden Mean Is the division of a line between one-half and one-third. The unequal division is more pleasing to the eyes then an equal division. Normally used with draperies and wall hangings.
The Golden Section Is the division of a line or form where the ratio of the smaller section is equal to the ration of the larger section to the whole. It’s • based on the progression of numbers. 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21… See picture on Page 246 in textbook
The Principle of Balance is the equilibrium among parts of design. There are 2 types of Balance • Formal Balance – is symmetrical balance, where all objects are exact on both sides of a center point • Informal Balance- or asymmetrical balance, is where different objects are arranged on the sides of a center point. Neither side overpowers the other side.
Assignment Using magazines or the internet, find pictures of each principle of design as it is used in landscaping or as an architectural element. Mount the pictures on paper and label correctly. Write a paragraph explaining how the principle of design was used, and determine in your opinion if it was used correctly. If it was not, how could it be altered to better exemplify the use of the principle. We will work on these for the next few days as we learn of all the different principles. When finished we will present them to the class orally.
