How do we make it? ü You start with the verb Estar: That is the I am , you are, he is… ü Add the verb, but remove the ending ü Add the matching gerund (fancy word for ing) estoy estamos estáis están + -ar = -ando -er/-ir = -iendo 3

Participio presente = -ing Infinitive Particip hablar hablando comer comiendo vivir viviendo estudiar estudiando pensar pensando * jugar jugando * NOTE: do not stem change them!!! 4

El Presente Progresivo In English you would never say: “He walking. ” or “She working. ” You say: He’s walking. or He is walking. She’s working. or She is working. We do the same in Spanish: Never leave out the verb ESTAR + -ando or -iendo 5

¿En inglés o en español? In English you can say: I am working right now or I am working tomorrow *** In Spanish you cannot do this. The progressive in Spanish is ONLY used to describe an action that is in process at the moment we are talking (ahora mismo). *** In Spanish we can use the expression IR + A + Infinitive to refer to the near future (tomorrow). Estoy trabajando ahora mismo. Voy a trabajar mañana. 8

What if we use a direct object pronouns Remember: 2 verbs 2 options: 1. Before both verbs -Yo lo estoy limpiando 2. Attached to the end of the second verb -Yo estoy limpiándolo **When attached to the end of a gerund (ing) you must add an accent. Remember if you double mess you have to triple mess. 14
