How to Make Precision Medicine Scalable & Mainstream? The UK approach
Industrial Strategy Grand Challenges
Data for Early Diagnosis & Precision Medicine
Genomics Stream • Aims to position the UK at the forefront of large scale WGS for diagnostics and precision medicine • Whole Genome Sequencing of all 500, 000 UK Biobank volunteers • Potential for additional sequencing of up to 25, 000 cancer patients (tumour and germline genome) – funds permitting • Overarching aim to support generation of novel diagnostic tools and precision therapies, in partnership with industry
Digital Innovation Hubs Stream • Delivered by UKRI in partnership with HDR UK and the NHS, building on investments from NHS England the devolved nations • Hubs will provide expert research data services, supporting analytical tool development and a range of innovative user requirements • A single UK-wide health research data fabric will ensure interoperability across all Hubs • ~£ 38 m over 4 years
Creating a Network of Digital Pathology, Radiology and AI Centres • Up to £ 50 million investment to establish a framework and governance structure to enable organisations to work together to deliver: – Data sharing and interoperability – Advanced data storage and analytical environments capable of managing large numbers of digital images and associated data. – The highest standards of data security, privacy and ethical approval, embedding public trust and engagement into the programme from the outset
The Centres • London Medical Imaging and Artificial Intelligence Centre for Value-Based Healthcare • Glasgow’s I-CAIRD (Industrial Centre for AI Research in Digital Diagnostics • NCIMI (National Consortium of Intelligent Medical Imaging) • The Northern Pathology Imaging Collaborative (NPIC) • The Pathology image data Lake for Analytics, Knowledge and Education (Path. LAKE)
