R. arm themselves to withstand an attack from the other. SPACE RACE- The superpowers compete in space. 1957 USSR sent Sputnik (satellite) into orbit. 1958 The U. S. sent a satellite up. 1961 USSR sent a man into space. In 1969, the U. S. put a man on the moon. Spy technology increased.

BERLIN A COLD WAR “HOT SPOT” After the war the city of Berlin was divided into 4 zones and occupied by the Allies Under orders from Stalin, in 1948, USSR blockades the city in an attempt to drive the Allies out of East Germany = airlift of supplies to West Berlin 1961, Khrushchev builds a wall to stop the flow of people fleeing the Eastern Communist countries
