1. Who is the pope? v The word “pope” comes from the Latin “papa” – a child’s word meaning “father”. v The title “pope” is a familiar and unofficial one – this word does not actually appear in Canon Law or official documents of Church governance. His official titles include: § “Supreme Pontiff” or Pontifex Maximus § Bishop of Rome § Vicar of Jesus Christ § Servant of the Servants of God § Successor of the Prince of the Apostles

3. Powers of the Pope v “The Roman Pontiff, as the successor of Peter, is the perpetual and visible source and foundation of the unity both of the bishops and of the whole company of the faithful. ” (Lumen Gentium 23) v “For the Roman pontiff, by reason of his office as Vicar of Christ and as pastor of the entire church, has full, supreme and universal power over the whole church, a power which he can always exercise freely. ” (Lumen Gentium 22)

Powers of the Pope v Papal infallibility – “the Roman Pontiff, when he speaks ex cathedra, that is, when carrying out the duty of the pastor and teacher of all Christians in accord with his supreme apostolic authority he explains a doctrine of faith or morals to be held by the universal Church, through the divine assistance promised him in blessed Peter, operates with that infallibility with which the divine Redeemer wished that His church be instructed in defining doctrine on faith and morals; and so such definitions of the Roman Pontiff from himself, but not from the consensus of the Church, are unalterable. ” v Key phrase is “doctrine of faith or morals”

4. The College of Cardinals v Cardinals are appointed by the Pope as advisors (in a similar way that the president appoints a cabinet) v Since 1059, the College of Cardinals elects the pope v Canon Law now requires that a man be a priest or bishop to be named Cardinal, and non-bishops must be immediately ordained v The College of Cardinals governs the Church during an interregnum period v Cardinals under the age of 80 can take part in a papal conclave – the size of this body is limited to 120. Right now, there are 117 cardinals out of a total of 209 that are under the age of 80.

4. The College of Cardinals v The United States has 11 cardinal electors, second only to Italy’s 28 v Cardinal Di. Nardo was named cardinal in 2007, the first cardinal named to the American South. How a Papal Conclave Works v Cardinal electors locked in Sistine Chapel – no communications access v 2 votes each morning and evening (4/day) - votes are hand-written and placed in urns (oath taken) v Votes counted (three appointed cardinals) and verified (three others). Ballots are threaded and then burned after being saturated with chemicals (black smoke = no pope; white smoke = pope) v 2/3 consensus required for a pope to be elected, runoff if conclave continues past 12 days v “Habemus papem!”
