According to the 1 st article of the Greek Constitution: • The form of Government in Greece is that of Parliamentary Republic • Popular sovereignty is the foundation of the Greek Constitution • All powers derive from the People and exist for the People and the Nation
“Syntagma Square” The Greek Parliament
Basic characteristics of the Greek political system • Greece is a Presidential Parliamentary Democracy • The President of Democracy is the head of the state • The Prime Minister is the head of the Government • There is a multi-party system (parties across the political spectrum run for national election) • The powers are separated in three: legislative, executive and judiciary (which is independent of the executive and the legislature)
The three powers • Legislative: power to make and change law it is conducted by the Parliament • Executive: • Judicial: power to put law in action it is conducted by the executive government power to make judgements to law it is conducted by the court and is independent of the executive and the legislative
Executive power The President of the Republic • he/she symbolizes the unity of the nation • is elected by the Parliament for a five year term • serves a maximum of two terms in office • appoints the Prime Minister • has the power to declare war and to conclude international agreements
“Proedriko Megaro” the Greek Presidency
The Prime Minister • is elected by the people • is the head of the government • is appointed by the President of Democracy with the absolute majority of seats in the Parliament (the principal of “declared confidence”) • is usually the leader of the party controlling the absolute majority of MPs (151 members) • directs the activities of the government

The Cabinet (ministerial council) • constitutes the government of Greece • is composed of the Prime Minister and the Ministers • Ministers are appointed by the Prime Minister • it defines and directs the general policy of the state

Legislative power The Parliament • is elected by all Greek citizens over the age of 18 • it has 300 members elected for a four year term • it is a unicameral legislature • its hearings start on the first Monday every October and finish in summer
