THE PIT AND THE PENDULUM • Written in and first published in 1842 • Set in the time of the Spanish Inquisition – Toledo, Spain • First Person POV
THE PIT AND THE PENDULUM • The starts with the protagonist who is unnamed waking up before three judges with no memory… • Black robed judges, extremely white • Sentence him to death • Alleged crime is unknown • Reader does not know if he is really guilty • Hinted that he survives – “They appeared to me white -- whiter than the sheet upon which I trace these words. ”

THE PIT AND THE PENDULUM • Taken to a chamber that is completely dark. • In and out of consciousness • Starts to measure the cell, he does this by: – Walking around feeling the cell – Tries to figure out the size – Counts his steps – Tears a piece of cloth from his clothing to mark starting point
THE PIT AND THE PENDULUM • Encounters a pit – Determines how deep it is by prying off a piece of stone and dropping it in the pit – Bread and water- back unconscious • When he awakes again there is a little light • He sees that the walls are not stone but metal now, with torture devices , evil figures • Is now tied to a wooden post, and only able to reach the food that is next to him— Spicy meat, no water
THE PIT AND THE PENDULUM • When he looks upward he notices a picture of Father Time • Pendulum— slowly moving from side to side • Slowly descending. • His attention is caught by rats • They start to go for his meat • Punishment for not falling in the pit

THE PIT AND THE PENDULUM • Because the Pendulum is moving so slowly – He starts to go mad • Wishing it will kill him already • Relaxes and waits for it— calm and happy • Begins to laugh and scream – As the pendulum gets closer, he notices its positioned to slice right over his heart
THE PIT AND THE PENDULUM • Comes up with plan – He is tied up by fabric – Takes the meat and rubs it all over the bonds – Rats began chewing through fabric just as the pendulum nips him • He breaks free and the pendulum rises back up to the ceiling – Knows he’s being watched • Although relieved that he escaped, knows he just postponed his death
THE PIT AND THE PENDULUM • Smells hot iron • The eyes of the figures glowing • Sulfurous light streaming through walls • Hinges start to collapse, dungeon starts to change shape • Walls start to close in on him making him edge towards the pit – He knows this is the end – Will either die by the hot iron walls or by falling into the pit and drowning
THE PIT AND THE PENDULUM • The walls continue to flatten and he is pushed to the edge of the pit • He screams just as he is about to fall into the pit when he suddenly hears loud crashes and voices – Blast of trumpets – Thundering clashes • The walls retract and he is caught just as he is about to fall to his death – French Army liberated Toledo, General Lasille rescues him

OVERALL • The story is Horror Fiction • Some themes are: Time, Torture • Close to death ⁻ a deep pit filled with water ⁻ swinging blade positioned to cut through his heart ⁻ heated, movable iron walls • Story deals with both mental and physical torture
