True or false? Air has no weight. When particles are heated they stay the same size. When ice is heated its particles melt. Steam is hot air. All particles are the same size. The bubbles in boiling water are made of water vapour. All substances are made of particles. Particles in a liquid are larger than in a solid.
Misconceptions All substances are made of particles. Everything is made of particles. These particles make up the substance, they are the substance. The particles of wax make up the candle. Misconceptions There is nothing between particles. Particles in solids, liquids and gases have nothing between them. This is a diagram of a gas. The particles drawn are the gas. The space between these particles contains nothing.
Misconceptions Particles of the same substance are the same in a solid, liquid and gas. Particles of water, for example, are exactly the same in ice, water and water vapour. They do not change size or shape, only the arrangement of the particles changes.

Misconceptions Melting and dissolving are different. Heating is needed for melting to occur. During heating a substance changes state from a solid to a liquid. Only one substance is needed. When a substance is dissolved in a solvent it forms a solution. Two substances are needed, the solvent and the solute.
