The Ph. D Program Ph. D program duration: 3 years (with possible extension to a fourth year) Courses: • All DEIB teaching activities in English • 25 credits from courses (typically 5 courses x 5 credits) • ≥ 10 credits from DEIB courses • 10 credits from courses of the Ph. D school (transversal courses) • ≤ 5 credits (1 course) may be from external Ph. D courses, Summer Schools. . • all courses with evaluation During the Ph. D program, a limited teaching activity (≤ 40 hours/year) could be authorized by the Coordinator

Your activities Advisor: anyone approved by the Ph. D Board, usually a professor, gives the research direction Tutor: member of the Ph. D Board, gives advice and approves the study plan Research § Within DEIB research areas -> Find the advisor in your research area § Involvement in research projects (basic and applied research) § Develop new research ideas -> publish papers, present them at conferences – aim at excellent research results § Write your thesis § Period of activity outside Politecnico (e. g. , abroad) is highly encouraged, but not mandatory. Economical support is provided.

Study plan presentation: - Select courses as soon as possible (see list available on Polimi website) - Get the approval by your tutor Enter info in Polimi information system. The study plan could be modified at any time Anytyme you enter or modify your plan, send an e-mail to phd-inf@polimi. it so that the plan could eb approved by the coordinator BEFORE you can get the evaluation for a course if strictly necessary, you may follow a course and enter it in the study plan afterwards (inform the Tutor, be aware of registration issues)

Some hints for study plan § Insert the Courses from the Ph. D courses list accessible from your ‘Ph. D Study Plan’ page (from DEIB, School, other Ph. D Programs) § The offer changes every year § For any type of external course (including summer schools) select: EXTERNAL COURSES WITH EVALUATION § Please note that formal approval of the study plan by the tutor and the Coordinator is needed § For all courses you should obtain an evaluation, otherwise a public seminar on the course must be given by the candidate, and an evaluation given by the advisor

Deadlines 16 § Formalize choice of advisor and tutor (31 st of December): e-mail to francesca. clemenza@polimi. it § Choose courses and insert them in study plan through the system § Thesis title and abstract (15 th of February) § Annual report (15 th of September): details on the web site § Annual exam (end Sept. /beginning Oct. ) § 15 min. presentation of research activities and courses. + Q&A Deadlines must be strictly matched!

Annual evaluations § Admission to the following year by the end of October § Criteria § First year: courses for a minimum of 15 credits should be taken and research on thesis should show a good start § Second year: all courses must be completed and main research should show a good progress, possibly a publication § Third year: evaluation of the 3 -years curriculum and pubblications § 3 rd year (Mid October): Thesis draft to external reviewers § 3 rd year (Mid November): admission to the final defense § Thesis defenseinf front of the external committee: December 2021/February 2022

Evaluations § For courses, the evaluation is pass or fail § For admission to second and third year the evaluation can be one of: § The candidate is proceeding as expected § The candidate should make effort to match expectations § The candidate should match expectations within next year § The candidate have to repeat the year § The candidate have to leave the Ph. D program § At the end of the third year the candidate should be either admitted to send thesis to the reviewers, if at least a pubblication of a good journal or conference has been accepted, and the obtained results match the expectations, or admitted to a fourth year, or should repeat the year or leave the Ph. D Program. § External reviewers can either admit the candidate to the final defense, or ask to improve thesis within at maximum six months.

Budget, Ph. D duration 19 § Each student can use 3068, 66 euro in the triennium for: § Traveling, conferences, publications § Books, computers, … which remain to the Ph. D School § Long stays abroad are possible (up to 18 months). Scholarships are increased 50% for the first six months. Formal approval by Ph. D Board is required. § Other funding may come from the advisor’s funds, teaching (up to 40 hours per academic year), … § Max duration of Ph. D = 6 years (each year can be repeated once)

D Board in their teaching, administration activities, and formalization of procedures to enroll, and to obtain the degree. It is usually located in building 20 of DEIB, on the ground floor, in the administrative area. Support for admnistration procedures Traveling If you plan to go abroad for research periods, conferences, summer schools, etc. , before leaving you must: • submit requests of authorization exclusively online (at least 10 days before departure) by accessing, through your personal page on the Polimi site (http: //www. polimi. it/servizionline/), to the application "Phd students career". Such requests should be explicitly approved by the Ph. D Program Coordinator. • after getting approval, fill the form online available on http: //www. polimi. it/servizionline/, in the Mission section, to request funding for missions to the Coordinator, if the mission is paid by your Ph. D funds, or to any other professor that will pay for your mission. Please, , check the box stating that your request has already been approved by the Program Coordinator. For insurance matters, you must fill this form even if you don't request any funding. BOTH authorizations should come to the mission office BEFORE your leaving date to activate insurance. If the mission is in Italy you have to: • fill the form online available on http: //www. polimi. it/servizionline/, in the Mission section, to request funds for missions to the Coordinator, if the mission is paid by your Ph.
