The Periodic Table W E I V E R
Before we review, let’s answer a question or two about element symbols. Can you think of an element that has a symbol (abbreviation) that is significantly different than the name of the element?
How were the element symbols determined? Each element gets its own symbol – either one or two letters long. Most element symbols are one or two of the first letters of the element. Some element symbols come from an element’s Latin name.
English & Latin Names Element Sodium Potassium Antimony Tungsten Natrium Kalium Stibium Wolfram (English Name) (Latin Name)
Where do these “weird” symbols come from? Some element symbols come from the seven metals used by ancient alchemists. Each of the metals was associated with one of the seven heavenly bodies (sun, moon, planets).
