The Brain, pickled
The Brain, Really Pickled “Troglodyte” Actually a chimpanzee brain – note the lack of convolutions
Left and Right Hemispheres Left Hemisphere: • controls movement and feeling on the right side of the body. Lefties: logical, organized, procedural. Right Hemisphere: • controls movement and feeling on the right side of the body. Right: organic, freeform, creative.
The Cerebrum: the largest part of the brain, consisting of the two hemispheres
The major divisions of the Cerebral Cortex.
Cerebral Cortex
Major Parts of the Brain, part 1. A. Cerebral Cortex: thin outer covering of cerebrum, 6 layers of neurons; the most recent evolutionary development of the brain. Two sub-cortexes: a) Motor cortex – controls voluntary movement. b) Sensory cortex – where vision, touch, hearing, pressure and temperature registers. c) Broca’s Area: the speech centre of the brain
The Four Lobes of the Brain FRONTAL LOBE: the largest lobe, includes the motor cortex ( voluntary movement), thinking, reasoning, judgement, planning for the future. PARIETAL LOBE: behind the frontal lobes, front part is the sensory cortex. * involved in the reception and processing of touch stimuli. OCCIPITAL LOBE: at the rear of the brain. * involved in the reception and interpretation of visual information. TEMPORAL LOBE: located slightly above the ears. * involved in the reception and interpretation of auditory phenomena.
Motor Cortex: strip of tissue at the rear of the frontal lobe. Controls voluntary (conscious) movement. Sensory Cortex: strip of tissue in parietal cortex, behind motor cortex. Where touch, pressure, temperature, and pain registers in the cortex. Broca’s Area: in the lower middle of the frontal cortex. Responsible for speech production, i. e. , directs muscle movement for speech.
Interior Parts of the Brain CORPUS CALLOSUM: thick band of nerve fibers connecting the two hemispheres. * Makes possible a) the transfer of information, and b) the coordination of activity between the hemispheres.
HYPOTHALAMUS: also in the lower central part of the brain; Regulates hunger, sexual behaviour, body temperature, and many emotional behaviours. controls autonomic functions. AMYGDALA: in the limbic system in the lower brain; controls responses to unpleasant stimuli, e. g. , fight or flight. CEREBRUM: the majority tissue / area of the brain, consisting of the two hemispheres.
