The Particle 的 • Used to show a possessive relationship • Like “ ‘s “ in English • Not used when talking about immediate family relations when you are talking about your own family. • • • 老师的名字。 我弟弟是中国人。 我妈妈很好。 王朋的妈妈很好。 这是你的照片吗？
数 Shù Numbers!
量词 Liàngcí, Measure Words • Number + Noun (IE two cats) • In Chinese, we put a word called a measure word in between the number and the noun to show that you are counting that object. • Many nouns have a special measure word— but we will learn those as we go along in the year. • 个is the most common measure word, and that is what we are working on in this lesson.
二 versus 两 • 二 and 两 both mean “two” but they are used in different contexts. – 二 is used for counting. It is always used for the last two digits. • 225 – 两百二十五 • 222 – 二百二十二 – 两 is used in front of measure words to talk about quantity.
都不/不都/都不/不都 • 他们不都是中国人. Not all of them are Chinese • 他们都不是中国人. None of them are Chinese • 他们不都有弟弟. Not all of them have younger brothers • 他们都没有弟弟. None of them have younger brothers
有没有/是不是 • Another way you can ask a question (instead of putting 吗 at the end) is to say the verb, then say your negative word, then say the verb again. = • 她有弟弟吗？= 她有没有弟弟？ • 她是中国人吗 她是不是中国人？
