Hinton ◦ Born in 1950 in Tulsa, Oklahoma ◦ Susan Eloise Hinton began writing the novel in 1965 when she was only 15 years old! ◦ Published in 1967 ◦ only her first and middle initials and last name were used, not her full name, partly because of the subject matter: gangs, and concern that readers may not take her seriously/want to read a book about this topic written by a young woman ◦ Using initials allowed readers to assume the writer was male

Realism ◦ Portrayed a realistic world with many of the issues faced by teens ◦ Written about teenagers by a teenager ◦ Hinton was able to write about gangs with accuracy since the “greasers” and the “socs” were gangs in her home town
