The Outage Data Initiative Why? § To improve disaster response, recovery and awareness efforts

The Outage Data Initiative Why? § To improve disaster response, recovery and awareness efforts by providing secure, real-time operational information, coordinated with internal and external stakeholders during major events. § “In time of crisis, our communities and country count on us to be able to work together as a team. We all must commit to a common way of doing business. ” – National Infrastructure Management System (NIMS) EPRI 2016 Outage Data Initiative Report: 3002007928 2 © 2017 Electric Power Research Institute, Inc. The Outage Data Initiative Why? Request from State Agency to Utilities Currently, [State Agency]

The Outage Data Initiative Why? Request from State Agency to Utilities Currently, [State Agency] accesses publicly available outage data through public websites. [State Agency] uses this information to inform emergency management operations; however, is limited by the inability to overlay outage data with incident information nor visualize a stateside outage picture. This can delay and/or misinform executive understanding of incident impacts and lead to degraded and less effective response operations. Direct access to outage data will enable [State Agency] executives and emergency responders to more accurately assess impacts on [State] residents and drive decision-making on the quantity, type and prioritization of emergency response resources. 3 © 2017 Electric Power Research Institute, Inc. The Outage Data Initiative Enabling Future Data Sharing Opportunities One utility’s vision… The goal: an application to provide enhanced damage assessment, outage restoration and resource management capabilities…and… • Works via BYOD (tablet, laptop, smartphone) • Is operating system-agnostic (Android, i. OS, Windows) • Can continue to function in a disconnected (no data connection) mode • Can provide and receive real-time or near real-time data, including dynamic grid, tabular, photo, and graphical data outside the corporate firewall via temporary credentials provided to mutual assistance or other non-routine support personnel. • Provides an extremely simple interface for field users • Can authenticate local and foreign crews and track crew location • Can handle large volumes (5 K+) of simultaneous users 13 © 2017 Electric Power Research Institute, Inc.
