The One Bus Away Transit Information System Alan
The One. Bus. Away Transit Information System Alan Borning Professor Emeritus UW Computer Science & Engineering
Using the One. Bus. Away App • Download the app (i. Phone or Android), install • Then center the map to your current location, and find the information for your stop
Sample rider email: ”Your stupid **%#* app is wrong!! Fix this immediately!” • One. Bus. Away does not generate the data! • Note the difference between scheduled arrival and real-time predictions • Other possible causes: connectivity issues with bus and KCM, naïve prediction algorithm, …. .
Other Common Problems • Make sure the app is allowed to use cellular data and to access your location when in use • It thinks you are in Tampa – turn on “automatically select region” on the settings, or manually select “Puget Sound”
Long History of UW Work in this Area • 1999: the pioneers: Dan Dailey and Joel Franklin, My. Bus • 2008: first implementation of One. Bus. Away – Initially a student project by Brian Ferris (Computer Science & Engineering) and Kari Watkins (Civil & Environmental Engineering – Became the topic of their Ph. D dissertations • 2013: Sound Transit begins operating the servers for this region – Continuing research at UW, particularly on accessibility • 2019: Open Transit Software Foundation established; One. Bus. Away project officially moves from UW to OTSF
Some One. Bus. Away Students: Brian Ferris, Kari Watkins, and Caitlin Bonnar
Other Ways to Access the Information • Web: http: //pugetsound. onebusaway. org • SMS – text a message to 41411 onebus 75403 (or whatever the stop number is) • Sign mode (allows inexpensive bus time displays in lobbies, coffee shops, etc
Supporting Riders with Disabilities • High contrast mode for low vision riders • Voice. Over mode for blind riders • SMS for deaf-blind riders
Why Use One. Bus. Away? • Because the apps are good! • But there are now also Google Maps, the Transit App, etc – they make fine apps as well (and Google has a trip planner …. ) • One. Bus. Away is nonprofit and has a strong commitment to user privacy; others are forprofit
