The Old Soft Shoe Tap dancing uses shoes to make percussive sounds. Small metal plates are attached to the heel and toe of both of a dancer’s tap shoes. Tap dancing is often used with jazz music. Tap dancing also is part of many Broadway musicals. “Soft shoe” is a particular style of tap dancing that doesn’t use tap shoes. Instead, dancers wear shoes with soft soles. Tempo The beat of a piece of music can be fast or slow. The speed of the beat is called tempo. The tempo also can be in between fast and slow, or moderate. Sometimes the tempo changes—it can speed up or slow down. If a song’s tempo is too fast, it can be hard to dance to it. Depending on the type of dance, the same is true if a song is too slow. Sing “The Old Soft Shoe” at a fast tempo. Then try singing the song at a slower tempo. At what tempo would you find it easier to dance?
