Motivation affects choice According to Maki and Snyder (2017), volunteer motivation affects the choice of task. Some examples: • All volunteers have altruistic motives • A sense of social responsibility and empathy is linked with direct helping (e. g. food bank volunteering) • However, volunteers who do advocay work aren’t that motivated by direct helping or empathy • People with a larger variety of motives/points of view prefer environmental volunteering But how do we find out about volunteer motivation? .
The Octagon model was developed by Anne Birgitta Pessi (e. g. Pessi née Yeung 2004). • There are 4 dimensions to volunteer motivation • Each volunteer has their own individual motivation profile, formed by: • Past experience, life situation • Relationship with the organisation • Values, emotions, belifest • Expectations and hopes about ther activity • Future expectations
Using the octagon model with volunteers You can use the model to estimate what motivates your volunteers individually • The model doesn’t consider things like values or altruism, but orientations to the tasks • Poles on the left are inward-looking, and ones on the right are outward-looking • Most volunteers won’t be at the very end of each pole • Motivations can be found out through e. g. interviews • Each individual can draw a motivation map • When you know the motivations, you need to think of ways to motivate each volunteer further. And you need to discuss motivations at many times, as motivations change becuase of time, age, life situation etc.
