THE NOTE TAKING PROCESS You might want to take notes
Note Taking consists of the cycle of…. Observe Record Review ORR isn’t a good acronym
Observations Determine what you record Record Gives you something to review Review Makes your next observations make sense
WARNING Without the information you’re going to learn from this chapter, any special note taking equipment you have is rendered useless Your expensive laptop High quality sound recording device Highlighters Pencils Even Paper Are worthless when it comes to notes unless you know what you’re doing
Setting the Stage Before the note taking process starts, you should… Have all the required materials Keep in an upright sitting position Review the material you covered last time
Pay Attention Unless your teacher is a drill sergeant, he/she won’t care if you pay attention or not. It is your own duty to. Make sure you’re still taking notes instead of scribbling, doodling, or whatever you do in boredom. Your own input means nothing when it comes to the notes. Just because you do not agree with what is being taught doesn’t mean you’re not exempt from learning it. PARTICIPATE!!!
Watch for note taking clues When a teacher repeats what they’ve said, it is usually important If the teacher writes it down, so should you! Excited Instructor? Important Notes.
Now put your hands together for… CORREY DAEMON
Techniques to improve your notes Key words to trigger memories Pictures and Diagrams to show data visually Keep notes together and in order. This makes review much easier. Use color to your advantage. Just make sure to keep the colors coded for a reason. There is no reason your notes should look like this
Using Graphic Signals Use Brackets, Parentheses, Circles, Squares, or whatever to organize your writings Use Stars, Exclamation Marks, Emoticons, whatever you feel like for key items to make them easier to spot. Connect articles using arrows or lines If you don’t understand something, put a giant question mark for you to come back to later to ask questions about.
If your using a recording device… They make great backup devices. Note the keyword backup. These messages can be referred to when you’re memory falters, but they aren’t a replacement. Test it before the lecture begins, you do not want to bring a recording device and find out that it isn’t working properly. Make sure the instructor approves of recording devices. For whatever reason you could be denied use of them.
