Objectives: To introduce and/or raise the awareness of earth observation utility in public sector entities To create a service center for earth observation and other data and analysis that meets the needs of those concerned with northern policy issues Methodology: Identify potential end users with a responsibility for “the North” Determine the information needs Provide demonstrative, EO-based service Strategy: The Northern View Work with scientists, government scientists & experts, and operational service providers

Where’s Our “North”? The Northern View “Northern regions” encompassing the Arctic and Subarctic, the boreal zone as well as all areas north (Cryosphere). This is an area of + 53 M km 2.

Why The Northern View? • Global significance • Becoming more open due to technology and changing climate • Harsh but pristine and fragile • Need for policy development • Many international bodies • Not sufficient commercial drivers to obtain the information needed The Northern View

An Example – Northern Aboriginals Subsidence living is more than an issue of food. • integral to personal, family, community spirit • important for health (diet, fitness) Ice Issues: Retreat of ice pack increases costs (fuel and repairs) Break-up of fast ice and slow freeze-up puts humans at risk Weaker ice (thickness) and edge location over shallows required for walrus Snow cover before rapid freeze increases human risk The Northern View Need information product(s) that better characterizes the sea ice for marine habitat and hunting

Potential Benefits to IICWG Promotion to policy sector will increase new uses/markets for ice center products Secure funding to support services (e. g. users want the product, but cannot pay directly) Collaborative r&D to transfer algorithms/techniques to operational level An opportunity to share data/costs (Northern View have overlapping data needs) The Northern View
